Therapeutic plasma exchange: exploring advanced treatment options
At Monash House Private Hospital, we are committed to offering patients access to advanced therapies.
One of the more specialised services available at our facility is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), which our doctors may consider for patients living with certain complex medical conditions.
What is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)?
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a specialised medical procedure that involves removing and replacing a portion of a patient’s plasma – the liquid component of blood. It is a type of apheresis, a technique for removing certain components from blood.
As part of your immune system, your body develops antibodies (proteins) that are programmed to identify and destroy certain cells. Normally, these antibodies are directed at invading cells that cause viruses. Sometimes, though, your body mistakes the target and destroys its own cells. That’s how autoimmune diseases are caused.
These antibodies are contained in plasma. TPE helps to reduce their levels in your blood, which may help manage some autoimmune conditions.
TPE is performed under the supervision of trained doctors and nurses in our outpatient department, using advanced apheresis technology and strict safety protocols.
How does therapeutic plasma exchange work?
During TPE:
You lie on a hospital bed while we access a vein in each arm and connect them to the apheresis machine at your bedside (we use the Spectra Optia system).
Blood is withdrawn through one arm and passed through the apheresis machine, which separates plasma from the other blood components.
The plasma, containing potentially harmful antibodies, is removed.
The remaining blood cells are then returned to your body through your other arm along with replacement fluids, such as albumin or saline.
The whole process takes about 2 hours and we use a blood warmer to maintain your body temperature and overall comfort. Each session is carefully tailored to your needs and performed by Monash House Private Hospital’s skilled staff.
When might TPE be considered?
Your doctors may consider TPE as part of their overall management strategy for certain:
Autoimmune-related conditions
Neurological presentations
Haematological conditions
Long COVID
Healthy Longevity
It is important to note that TPE is a prescription-only medical procedure. Any decision regarding the appropriateness of TPE must be made following a thorough consultation with a qualified healthcare professional who can assess your individual needs and medical history.
